Saddington – Laughton (5.25 miles)
The route
Turn left out of the Queens Head onto Main Street, then turn left beside the church and follow the lane down to the riding school. Head through the yard and continue to the gate leading onto Mowsley Road. Cross the road and go through the waymarked gate immediately opposite — or over the stile if the gate is locked.
Follow the path alongside Saddington Brook as it winds through three fields. You’ll need to climb a few stiles along the way. Partway through the third field, a footpath leads up the slope back to Mowsley Road.
Turn right on the road and stroll up it until you reach the permissive path on the left, just where the road bears slightly right. This path takes you across several fields with lovely views and a few gates. Don’t forget to turn around occasionally — the scenery behind you is just as good as what’s ahead.
Eventually you’ll step onto a farm track. Turn right and follow it upwards, then downwards to a gate. Here the rough surface becomes tarmac as you head uphill once again.
The road flattens out and leads you to a small triangle — the junction with Main Street. For a shorter option, turn left here. If you fancy a wander around the village, turn right and then left at the next junction.
Whichever route you choose, you’ll arrive at another triangle at the junction with Gumley Road. This is the road you want. It’s usually quiet, with few cars and the occasional horse, and the scenery is excellent throughout.
Towards the end of the road you’ll reach a cattle grid and a crossroads. Take the road on the left, signposted “Gated Road Saddington 2 miles”. There may once have been gates along this road, but there are none to worry about now.
The single‑track road drops steeply at first before levelling out on its way to Saddington Reservoir. On the left you’ll pass what used to be the sailing club, enclosed by a tall metal fence. Immediately after the fence are some steps leading up to the reservoir. Climb these and wander along the crest, taking care not to fall in. Depending on the season, you may spot a variety of birds on the water.
At the far end of the crest, rejoin the road and follow it around until it drops down to meet Mowsley Road. Turn right here and take care as you climb this final section. Stick to the road and it will lead you straight back to the Queens Head.
