Fleckney and Kibworth Running Club

your village, your runners

Fleckney and Kibworth Running Club is all about providing a friendly and inclusive setup for local runners of all abilities. So if you are just looking to get into running or aiming to crack a marathon you will be made welcome at our Club Nights.

We offer a variety of distances in both road running and cross country, and one of our key principles on Club training nights is that nobody runs alone. Sessions involving hill reps, core work and speed are also a regular feature, but if you just want a steady few miles at your own pace on a regular basis, we won’t force you to run up and down any monstrous hills!

During winter we generally meet at Beauchamp College on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with routes around Oadby & Wigston, but occasionally run in Great Glen, or head across the fields for a torchlit cross country back on home turf. From January we are planning to hold the Thursday night sessions in Kibworth, using the Kibworth Methodist Church on School Road as our base. This will give us somewhere to meet up pre-run and enjoy a well-earned cup of tea or coffee afterwards. Club Chair, Andy Kemp has even hinted at providing biscuits or homemade cakes as an incentive to turn up and run!

Throughout the year there is the opportunity to take part in the Leicestershire Road Running League races and Derby Runner Cross Country League events. These events attract runners of all abilities and whilst we encourage everyone to join in, there is certainly no pressure to do this.

Members often share their plans for weekend runs, especially those looking for company on longer runs, building up to a Half or Full Marathon.

The Club also organises a number of social events, usually involving food, a beer or two and sometimes running as well. The Club Christmas Dinner and Annual Summer BBQ are always well attended.

If you are interested in coming along, please get in touch, and for more information take a look at our Club website. Plans for the week are always on there, so if you’re thinking of turning up on a Club night please check, just in case we are relocating for a night.

Andy Kemp: Bagworth Heath

Bagworth Heath Cross Country – 13th January

Four Club runners headed out to Bagworth Heath near Coalville for the 4th event in the Derby Runner Cross Country League. A testing course included a testing hill on a two lap course with woodland and grassland tracks, and a fair old helping of mud. Bernie Owen was first overall and sole lady representative in a time of 56:58 for 61st position in the Females race. Andy Findlay led the men home in 58:56 for 258, John Redfearn 63:02 (285) and Andy Kemp 78:12 (323) made up the quartet.

Remaining races in this series are at Grace Dieu, Shepshed on 17th February and Bosworth Field on 3rd March.

Alan Gibson
Brass Monkey Half Marathon

York Brass Monkey Half Marathon – 13th January

Alan Gibson ventured up to York for this popular early run in the Calendar. Well over 1,500 runners enjoyed a flat course and although there was a cold breeze it wasn’t quite the Brass Monkey weather we have seen more recently. Gibson finished in a time of just under 1:55 for 1,048th position overall.

Tigger Tor Fell Race – 27th January

Sam Pole was in action over a 10 mile fell race in the Peak District. The event consist of around 1,500 feet of ascent, and no official route, just 11 checkpoints that needed to be completed in order. Sam achieved a highly creditable time of just under 1:20 for 19th position out of 381 runners.

January was a fairly quiet month for the Club in terms of League Races or other competitive events. However this doesn’t mean that Club members have been taking it easy by any means. From complete beginners to those training for Manchester and London Marathons, Club nights continue to be busy whatever the weather.

Couch to 5k Program

The Club has seen a great response to the first few weeks of this popular program to help complete beginners get into running, as well as encouraging runners who might have taken a break to ease back in to regular activity. A total of 16 turned up for Week 1 and the vast majority have returned for the subsequent weeks as they gradually build up the distance. Meeting at our new base in the Kibworth Methodist Church the enthusiasm has not wavered, and it is hoped that a number of them will not just complete the course, but go on to become full club members and progress further.

Leicestershire Road Running League (LRRL) 2019

Fixtures for the Leicestershire Road Running League for 2019 have been confirmed with the first few events listed here. It is hoped that the Club will be well represented throughout the season.

Stilton 7 – Sunday 24th February, Kibworth 6 – 17th March, Desford 5 – 31st March

parkrun

parkrun organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs all around the world and have several in the Leicester area. They are open to all and area safe and easy to take part in. The emphasis is very much on it being a run, not a race, but runners are timed so you can monitor your own progress. Many of our club members are regular parkrunners on a Saturday at Market Harborough, Braunstone or Victoria Park, as well as travelling further afield. As well as runners, parkrun relies on volunteers to help organise the event on the day. For younger runners, aged between 4 and 14 there is the option of 2km Junior parkruns held on a Sunday at Market Harborough and Aylestone. If you are interested in either event please visit http://www.parkrun.org.uk/
